Shortly before their semi-final number on Wednesday, Mayyas posted a note on her Instagram page telling her followers, “Tonight we perform on the biggest stage in the world. We dedicate this to Lebanon, to its people. and the whole world.”
Their number in the semi-finals, which turned them into a giant, shimmering tree, was described as “spellbinding” and “magical” by many media outlets.
The 17th season finale of America’s Got Talent is set to take place on Tuesday, with the winner to be announced the following day.
Mayyas’ recent achievement comes after the troupe received a Golden Buzzer for a June issue from Sofia Vergara, the Colombian-American actress who sits on the AGT jury.
Mayyas follows the artistic direction of choreographer Nadim Cherfan.
In a video shown ahead of the June performance, one of the troupe members said that Cherfan “brought a new style and a new dance technique to Lebanon”.
Meanwhile, Cherfan explained in the video that “Lebanon is not a country where dancers, especially female dancers, can build a solid career on their art.”
Despite this, noted another dancer, “the women in the troupe have a free, safe and creative space to dance. We want to show the world that we are capable of standing tall as really strong and powerful women.” .
In 2019, Mayyas won the sixth season of Arabs Got Talent, an Arab world spin-off of the American show.
Mayyas also took part in Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions the same year.
