Newham-based street dance crew IMD Legion saw their Britain’s Got Talent dreams cruelly cut short last night (June 3) as they contested the last of the semi-finals live.

IMD Legion had wowed the Britain’s Got Talent judges with their audition earlier in the series, getting four yeses from Simon Cowell and co.

In last night’s semi-final, held at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith, IMD Legion was unfortunately unable to continue its run.

Of the eight acts competing, only two would be sent to Sunday’s final. The first is decided by popular vote, and the second by the judges, between the second and third most popular acts.

In the end, stand-up comedian Axel Blake won the popular vote, while young poet Aneeshwar Kunchala was chosen by the judge.

IMD Legion Founder and Managing Director Omar Ansah-Awuah said: “It was fantastic to perform again last night in the semi-final of Britain’s Got Talent.

“This performance was very personal to us and a tribute to the family members and dancers we have lost in recent times.

“The public reaction to the performance was overwhelming and the comments from the judges could not have been more positive, so it is obviously disappointing not to qualify for the final.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my team for their commitment and hard work, and I’m grateful for all the support and for those who voted for us.”

Ahead of last night’s performance Haringey band member Leila Butler, 18, said she was ‘delighted’ the IMD Legion had gone this far.

She added that she was “going there to represent Haringey”.

This wasn’t the first time IMD Legion had taken part in Britain’s Got Talent. The group, which took 30 dancers aged 11 to 35 to the show, also narrowly missed out on a place in the final in 2015.

Founded in 2010, the IMD Legion has a total of 70 dancers and runs open classes every week in east London.

The Britain’s Got Talent final takes place at 7.30pm on Sunday June 5 on ITV.
