Malkin Morris dancers and musicians are all ready to welcome visitors to their free sampling session at the Roughlee Village Center at 7 p.m. on Monday, January 10.

The women’s team and band, The Roughlee Ruffians, meet weekly to practice dancing and music and can be seen stirring up a storm on the streets of Lancashire villages and towns throughout the year.

Now the team hopes to give budding street artists the chance to join in the dance – and grow their membership.

“It would be a great New Year’s resolution for 2022 – getting in shape, making new friends and learning performance skills all at the same time,” said co-squire Gin Crewe. “Morris dancing is a great tradition, in which everyone can participate. It also has a fairly long history – it is first mentioned around 1450 – and has been popular in Lancashire since Victorian times.

“Morris dancing is super fun, great for fitness and coordination, and can be done by people of all ages and abilities. You don’t need any previous experience either, although I know that there are quite a few former Morris dancers that we would love to welcome.

Gin said Malkin is looking forward to a busy year.

“It’s going to be a really exciting and busy year. We already have so much going on which is great, especially considering the past two years when many events had to be canceled due to Covid.

“We have a big party in Liverpool in April, we’ve been invited to a folk festival in Rochdale and are planning to have our own dance day in July – and that’s just getting started. It should be a great year of music and dancing and we are all looking forward to it.

In the meantime, she added, the team hopes to see plenty of new faces at Roughlee on Monday night.

“We would like to see as many people as possible,” she said. “Everyone will be welcomed. Come and try it. You will appreciate it.
