Meet the Mayyas, the dance troupe that talks about movement – not just what we do with our bodies.
The Mayyas are an all-female team from Lebanon, a country in the Middle East where dance as a profession is not fully respected, especially for women. But that didn’t stop choreographer Nadim Cherfan from forming the group in 2019!
Nadir and the Mayyas have already tasted success. In 2019, they won the sixth season of “Arabs Got Talent,” taking home a cash prize of $53,333. The same year, they appeared in “Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions”. Although they did not win, Simon Cowell called the “genius” act.
In 2022, the troupe finally got their shot at a $1 million prize when they were selected to perform on the 17th season of “America’s Got Talent.” Nadir said they were inspired to audition by former AGT contestant Nightbirde, whose sweet song and tragic health story touched so many.
“You can’t wait until life isn’t harder before you decide to be happy,” the singer advised. Nadir and the Mayyas took these words as a call to action!
Before starting their number, the ladies explained to judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and Sofia Vergara the difficulties they face as dancers in Lebanon.
“Lebanon is a very beautiful country, but we live a daily struggle,” said a dancer.
“Standing on the biggest stage in the world is the only chance for us to prove to the world what Arab women can do, what art we can create, the fights we fight,” added another.
The name Mayyas “is an Arabic word that means the proud march of a lioness,” the troupe explained. Just seconds into their performance, we can see why the name fits so perfectly!
The dancers move as a single unit, arms and legs moving in perfect synchronicity. They prowl like cats and smack like snakes, mesmerizing viewers with their incredibly fluid movements. When they were done, the judges gaped in shock. Even Simon, who had seen the number before, called them “the best dance number we’ve ever seen”.
All of the judges were blown away, but Sofia felt a special connection to the dancers because of their fight for equal rights. As they cast their votes, the actress told them, “I would be so honored to afford you the means to be on this journey because you deserve it. And I want to be a part of it!
Then she stood up and won the Golden Buzzer, sending the Mayyas straight to the finals!
As golden confetti rained down on the dancers, we can’t help but applaud the progress they are making around the world! Powerful women standing up for their rights send a message to anyone who has ever felt less than.
