Penn State Natya Wins “Penn State’s Best Dance Crew” at Seventh Annual Competition | University Park Campus News

Penn State Infusion held its seventh annual “Penn State’s Best Dance Crew” on Saturday, where seven dance crews came out to perform and show off their skills.

The Schwab Auditorium was packed with an enthusiastic crowd who came to see dance styles ranging from Indian classical to hip-hop.

The seven teams that performed were Orchesis, Penn State Natya, Urban Dance Troupe, KPMD, Whiplash, Outcast and Penn State Sher Bhangra.

Penn State Natya and Urban Dance Troupe walked out of Schwab Auditorium with trophies. Urban Dance Troupe took second place, while Penn State Natya took first place, with the title, “Penn State’s Best Dance Crew“.

Penn State Natya is an Indian classical dance premier team. He performed an emotional dance that told the story of a journey through the five stages of grief. The story was called “Mugabla: Battle Against Grief”.

It was Penn State Natya’s first competition of the year, and Penn State Natya dancer Shreya Bhatt said she hopes for continued success this year.

“I’m so happy to be here and so grateful for this opportunity to be able to play and get placed,” said Bhatt (senior – neurobiology). “Our goal is to portray stories like the one we did about the five stages of grief, which every person goes through.”

Runner-up winners Urban Dance Troupe performed an energizing hip-hop routine of a dance battle between Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, two rappers notorious for feuding.

Samylda Charles dances for Urban Dance Troupe, the first student-run hip-hop team to hail from the Penn State Altoona campus.

“It’s definitely more exciting than stressful to play, as this is now my third time in this competition,” said Charles (junior-pre-medicine). “We only had a week to prepare for this, so we trained hard every day for seven days.”

As for the famous “Nicki or Cardi?” debate, Charles replied, “Definitely Cardi.”

Infusion 2019 Director of Sponsorships Ritwik Biswas said hosting “Penn State’s Best Dance Crew” is a great way for the Infusion board and committee to prepare for the show in March.

Biswas worked the box office all day and was thrilled to see such a big turnout for Penn State’s Best Dance Crew.

“Every year the turnout has been great, but this year it met those standards a little more than I expected,” said Biswas (junior mechanical engineer).

Penn State Natya will now be the show number for the Infusion show.

Infusion is an intercollegiate dance competition taking place at the Eisenhower Auditorium on March 16. Nine teams from across the country are invited to perform at Infusion, where they will compete for prize money and submission points for two different national championships, Legends and Bollywood America.

Infusion, a Bollywood dance competition, held its performances at Eisenhower this Saturday, with each team performing an original dance routine and storyline.
