GRVMNT is an 11-member dance team originating from Fresh Groove Productions in Richmond. Fresh Groove Productions specializes in teaching hip-hop, street- and break-dance skills to students aged five to 21. GRVMNT moved forward in the contest, which is produced by jury judge Jennifer Lopez and stars Ne-Yo and Derek Hough.

Michael Wu and Ben Eng, both 17, spoke to Postmedia about their appearance on the show.

Q: How was the GRVMNT formed?

Ben Eng: We’ve been dancing nearby in the same studio for a while, but World of Dance is the first time this group of 11 dancers have performed together. We are 11, 12 and 13 and we are 17. Our team captain, Emily, is the oldest, so I’m guessing that’s the grandmother.

Q: How many routines did you prepare for the audition process, which seems to be quite exhausting?

Michael Wu: For the auditions, we had two different routines that we rehearsed. Before you audition, you perform your routine in front of mentors who critique your routines on do’s and don’ts. It was really helpful. But we heard that we were successful, we had to change everything and come up with entirely new routines.

Q: No one in the GRVMNT is new to competition. Is the dance world on the next level?

Ben Eng: Of course, we always go to competitions. It doesn’t matter if they are big or small, we are there. But even though there were elements that we knew quite well, World of Dance is still outside of our comfort zone. It’s hard.

Q: I was surprised that GRVMNT only had a few tweets when it came to World of Dance. I guess it’s because the band is so new?

Michael Wu: Well, we have an Instagram page and email for the band, but no website. I guess it would be a good idea to work on that since we’re much more prominent now.

Ben Eng: Focusing on the competition is obviously the most important thing now because it’s not getting any easier. Coming from Canada, we feel an added pressure as we represent both our city and our country on the show. If everyone is that good, that must mean we’re at that level as well, so we have to be at our best.

Q: It’s more fun than going to school remotely, isn’t it?

Michael Wu: The thing is that while we were doing the show, there were teachers watching us to make sure we followed our homework during the filming. No one was at school.

Ben Eng: It’s a good thing that we did our job and didn’t fall behind. But it was a bit stressful juggling the two, to say the least.

World of Dance Season 4 airs on CTV Tuesday nights, check local listings for broadcast times or watch onCTV.ca.
