Lebanese dance group Mayyas auditioned on Tuesday, and the band’s choreographer, Nadim, revealed that they were inspired by former Golden Buzzer winner Nightbirde to overcome their obstacles and compete.

“I was inspired by so many people, but what really got us to audition this year was Nightbirde,” Nadim explained. “She said, ‘We can’t wait until life isn’t harder before we decide to be happy. “”

Nightbirde, real name Jane Marczewski, was unable to complete her AGT run due to breast cancer, which she sadly succumbed to in February.

Before their performance, the band spoke backstage with host Terry Crews about the importance of competition. “Our presence here, on the biggest stage in the world, is our only chance to prove to the world what Arab women can do,” said a dancer. “The art we can create. The battles we fight.

The incredible performance was well received by the judges, especially Sofia Vergara who found it empowering.

“It was the most beautiful and creative dance I’ve ever seen,” Vergara said. “I would be so honored to empower you even more on this journey because you deserve it and I want to be a part of it!”

Vergara slammed the Golden Buzzer. Now the Mayyas automatically move on to the live rounds, where they will have the chance to impress more viewers and make a powerful statement about the women of their homeland.

“It’s to represent what Arab women, Lebanese women are capable of,” said one dancer, “and it’s a life-changing experience for us.”
